In an effort to encourage students from the Shaw area to attend college, Shaw Community Ministry awards scholarships to a select number of students each year. Students apply for the awards and the recipients are honored at a special banquet. Recent scholarship winners are now studying at Ohio State University, University of District of Columbia and other institutions of higher learning. SCM relies on special donations to fund the scholarships.

Criteria for the scholarship:
Applicants for the Shaw Community Ministry Scholarship must be high school seniors or the equivalent who have demonstrated promise of success in college or other post-secondary schooling.  Academic promise may be demonstrated by a strong pattern of improving grades and academic effort, together with extracurricular activities that indicate involvement in community life through the arts, volunteer service, or other activities that contribute to the well-being of others.

Applicants should be current residents of the Shaw neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., 21 years of age or younger, and enrolled in or graduated from high school or an accredited GED study program.

All applicants must complete the
D.C. Public Schools application form with Shaw supplementary questions. Click here to download supplementary questions in fillable PDF.
