Patrick Walker, Program Director
Patrick Walker has been working with Shaw Community Ministry for 2 years. He initially started as a contractor loaning digital devices for SCM’s computer classes. As a business owner in the area, Walker knows the importance of technological training. Walker’s responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the program coordinators, teaching digital literacy classes for all ages, tutoring teenagers in math, assisting in grant writing, overseeing the contractor providing enrichment programs, and building and maintaining relationships with vendors. Walker appreciates the unity SCM brings to all of the different generations living in Shaw Community.
Gwendolyn Howard, Program Coordinator
Gwendolyn Howard, aka Ma G, started off as a volunteer at Shaw Community Ministry in 2009. She became an employee in 2010 and has been working for SCM for over a year. Howard has an associate’s degree in early child/infant education. She is currently working on another degree in infant development. Apart from her office duties of filing, answering phones, and checking e-mails, Howard has the fun job of helping children with their homework and activities, picking them up after school, setting up for the after school program and providing snacks. In addition to all of that, living in Shaw Community gives Howard an opportunity to interact and form bonds with children outside of the after school program.
Melissa Laws, Program Coordinator
Melissa Laws has been with SCM for 7 months. She became involved when one of her daughters was accepted into the after school program. After being a parent volunteer for some time she was offered a job and immediately accepted. Her responsibilities include maintaining the facility, tutoring and helping with homework. Laws is relatively new to the community, having lived in Shaw for a little over a year. Her interests in volunteering and working with children are combined in her role as a program coordinator.
Greg Windley, Program Coordinator
Greg Windley has been with Shaw Community Ministry for one year. He has previously worked in a daycare and has experience through association with other non-profits such as HJ Heritage and Glenarden Tenant Association. Like his fellow program coordinators, Windley works directly with children in the after school program. He also helps plan special events and activities such as the annual Christmas and Halloween parties. Windley believes one of the most rewarding experiences of working with SCM is seeing how children grow up and become strong contributors to society.
Darryl Harris, Sexton
Darryl Harris is the newest member of the Shaw Community Ministry, having been with the organization for only five months. Harris was attracted to SCM by the friendly atmosphere, and the opportunity to help children and his community. His main duty is to keep the facility where the children work, play, and go about their daily routine clean and safe. Harris also volunteers at the annual Christmas party, assisting with preparation and clean up. His daughter and granddaughter are also involved with the programs SCM offers.
